Preludio: The Art of Creating a Uruguayan Icon

Aged in the historic Cava Preludio, this wine is a masterpiece that strikes the perfect balance between tradition, terroir, and the influence of the ocean.

Since its first vintage in 1992, Preludio has been recognized as one of Uruguay’s finest aging wines and a true global icon. This wine stands out not only for its extraordinary blend, based on Tannat with contributions from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Marselan, but also for the unique elements that shape its identity.

One of the most important factors is the influence of the ocean. Just as it happens in Bordeaux, here it is the Atlantic Ocean that plays a crucial role in balancing the nutrients the vines need to produce long-aging wines. In Preludio, this Atlantic influence is reflected in the freshness and elegance of its distinctive profile, which reveals its full potential over the years.

Aging: the key element

However, what truly defines Preludio is its aging process in the historic Cava Preludio. This stone cellar, built in 1745, is a testament to our family’s rich winemaking tradition. According to Fernando Deicas, president of Bodega Familia Deicas and an authority on aging wines: “If the barrels don’t spend at least 24 months in our cellar, Preludio wouldn’t be what it is. That space has a unique impact. In addition to ideal humidity and temperature, the walls of Cava Preludio house fungi that only grow in cellars where wine has been aged for many years. They are essential for our wine to develop its distinctive character.”

After spending time in the cellar, the barrels are bottled and then aged for an additional three years before being released. This slow process is what turns Preludio into an outstanding aging wine, capable of maturing for decades and evolving in complexity over time.

A defining dinner

Another crucial moment in creating each vintage of Preludio is the Preludio Dinner, an annual event where the final blend is selected. This event is much more than a tasting; it is an experience that brings together people who share a deep connection with the wine. As Fernando Deicas explains: “To be part of the Preludio Dinner, it’s not enough to be a wine lover. You have to know Preludio, have enjoyed it on several occasions, and understand its essence. Only then can you contribute to the decision of which blend to bottle. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously.”
